I was reading an interesting article about a green town that is being considered in the Florida Panhandle. The idea is to make it a model of green living for the future. I like the idea, especially for new developments. Now, we just need to update the older ones and convince developers across the globe that green is the way to go!
In the meantime, if you’re thinking of moving and wondering where you could find a place that is ‘green’, either LEED- certified or otherwise, check out Listed Green, which touts itself as the ‘ MLS for Green, Sustainable, Energy Efficient Homes and Developments Worldwide’, or Green Home for Sale, the ‘Green and Healthy Home Marketplace’, or Modern Green Living. There are also state-specific sites out there, so jump on Google, or, may I suggest Blackle (more energy-efficient version of Google) and take a look.

Cleaners and estrogen
No, this is not some subtle allusion to the fact that only women should be cleaning — especially since I’m a woman! It’s about the fact that some household cleaners, personal care products, and laundry cleaners contain chemicals that stimulate estrogen production. Nonylphenol ethoxylates, or NPEs, is one such chemical, used as a surfactant in detergents as well as in other products around the home. NPE has been identified as the potential cause for male fish taking on female fish qualities and for increasing reproductive organ disorders and decreasing sperm counts in men.
According to the Northwest Coalition on Alternatives to Pesticides, it is hard to know in what quantity NPEs are used, since they are claimed as trade secrets when they are used as inerts. And because of the effects on wildlife and potential effects on humans, the Sierra Club is asking for a ban on NPEs. Though some companies, such as Procter &Gamble, phased out the use, it is still safer to stick to the natural alternatives. As a side note, Europe and Canada have already restricted NPEs use . We continue to be behind the curve on this stuff–I hope we take the lead someday!!

Seventh Generation Thwarts Seventh Generation…Of Pests
Seventh Generation boasts a fabulous line of non-toxic Natural Citrus Cleaners that won’t harm your loved ones, but will eliminate your enemies. That is, if your enemies are mosquitoes and cockroaches. That’s right, cockroaches - the only living creature fabled to survive a nuclear holocaust can’t last a minute when faced with this hydrogen peroxide solution (check out how hydrogen peroxide acts as a pesticide).
In fact, there are many gardeners who spray a home-made hydrogen peroxide mixture on their plants to repel insects. This doesn’t appear to harm the plants and can be used on vegetables and fruit, too, both protecting your yield and your health. Conventional insect-killing products often seem to poison us in the process, so it’s comforting to know that this product functions as both a non-toxic cleaner and pest exterminator, thereby killing two nuisances with one chemical compound.
For more alternatives to conventional pesticides, take a look at the National Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides and Beyond Pesticides.

Is your city a “cool city”? Make it one in 2008!
A little over two years ago, The Sierra Club launched the Cool Cities Campaign. The goal was to encourage mayors and other local leaders to take the initiative to implement measures that would reduce global warming pollution. For instance, some cities are committing to converting a percentage of their energy to renewable energy and other cities are switching to LED traffic lights and crosswalk signals. Seattle’s Mayor Greg Nickels, was instrumental in launching the U.S Mayors Climate Protection Agreement which pledged to reduce carbon dioxide pollution to 7% below the 1990 level by 2012. The Cool Cities Campaign is reaching out to other mayors who may not have signed on yet and also is encouraging individuals to initiate local energy solutions and to get their mayors involved.
Check to see if your community is already a Cool City here. If it is, you can find out what they have done so far. For instance, my county in New York has just achieved the 3rd milestone of having the Mayor sign the U.S. Mayor’s Agreement. The next milestone will be to implement the proposed goals.
The Sierra Club Cool Cities website provides a wealth of information about how to get involved, the progress of other cities and any other information you may possibly need. Also take a look at the Sierra Club’s Cool Cities Campaign Activist Toolkit. It provides a checklist of the steps needed to organize a Cool Cities in your community. Each step is then described in detail and it even includes sample media materials and sample letters that can be sent to your mayor.
